The Spirit of Ganesh
Slum kids of Calcutta

9781911175575 Many children have a very hard life in India. They sort through rubbish heaps, work in factories and beg on the streets. This is a story, the first of three, that tells of the lives of Rupa and her little sister Amrita. It tells of the hardships they endure, the adventures they have and the many people they meet. Lonely rich girl Aisha lives in the big house. Rupa and Aisha become friends and defeat the horrible Mr. Biswas. Danva, the dog, saves Amrita and becomes her best friend. Shanti and Hamid appear at the end of the book ready to continue the ‘Slum Kids’ story in Book 2. The ‘Spirit of Ganesh’ is a mixture of fun, drama, sadness and love, all watched over by the benevolent smile of the Elephant God.

After teaching small children, for many years, I retired and now have six grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren. My early retirement was spent backpacking around India. On returning to England I had many photos but no intention of writing a children’s story. However, Shanti, who we met at a bus station, kept emerging in my memories of the street children in India. Because of this, I became obsessed with the thought that I had to write a story about four of the children, who lived and smiled in the face of horrendous misfortune. The spirit of Garnesh is the first of a trilogy. The other two being A Dance for Rupa and Shanti. I wanted a child with a physical handicap to be central to a story. Shanti and his special friend Ashiq are real children and as such were a special inspiration to me.

Girls Can’t Play Football
David Waugh

9781909644861 Lauren longed to play football. She was sure she would be good at it. She had watched endless videos of matches, especially of her hero, Lionel Messi, and she spent hours practising her ball skills in her tiny back yard and in the passageway behind her house, and on the wasteland next to an old, disused factory near her house.
She had often watched the boys from a distance and she was certain that she was more skilful than most of them. The trouble was, she had never played in a game. She could dribble in and out of the obstacle courses she set up for herself using plastic bottles and drinks cans, and she could trap and volley the ball as she bounced it off the brick wall of the old factory. What she did not know was if she could use her skills when other people were trying to take the ball from her. But before she could find out, she had to persuade the boys to let her play!

Lottie’s Run
David Waugh

Lotties Run Cover_9781909644557 Lottie’s Run is a novel for readers aged nine and upwards. It tells the story of a girl who is kidnapped by a gang of two men and a woman who demand that Lottie’s father, who is captain of England’s football team, enables opponents, Andorra, to score two goals against his team in a forthcoming match. The story begins with Lottie hiding from her captors in dark woodland at night, and tells the story of her escape and the kidnappers’ pursuit of her through a strange and unfamiliar land. Lottie is of mixed race, and although this is not generally significant to the story, there is some discussion about racism. She is a strong, determined character who battles against periods of despair as she overcomes various challenges by using initiative and by considering different options. Lottie is also good at sport and is academically able.
There is a dramatic conclusion to Lottie’s adventure, which involves heroic acts and an ingenious, if painful, solution.

Teach Primary Magazine...
... well worth a place in any primary school library ...pacey and accomplished ...
full of dramatic twists and turns, and told with compelling confidence...,
a story that will appeal to boys and girls alike, across a broad range of reading abilities;
it would also work well as a model text to inspire pupils to produce descriptive and dynamic examples of their own creative writing.

Amazon Reader Review...
The book is about the kidnapping of 11 year old Lottie Parry.
To say more would be to spoil the plot.
It kept us in suspense from start to finish.
Short chapters and great illustrations make this one that the kids will want to read for themselves.
I hope we will be hearing more from David Waugh.
